Amazon’s European Renewable Energy Projects Contribute €2.4 Billion in Investment and 3,900 Jobs

In 2022, Amazon announced the addition of 39 new renewable energy projects across Europe, bolstering clean energy capacity by over one gigawatt. With a total of 160 wind and solar projects in 13 European countries, Amazon is expected to provide 5.8 gigawatts of clean energy capacity, sufficient to power 4.7 million European households annually when all projects are operational.

These initiatives include 15 rooftop solar installations on Amazon facilities and 24 utility-scale wind and solar projects, including their first solar farm in Greece. Amazon’s investments in these projects support the transition away from fossil fuels and promote the decarbonization of local energy grids.

These renewable energy projects have had a significant impact on the European economy. Between 2014 and 2022, Amazon’s wind and solar farms in Europe have generated an estimated €2.4 billion in investments and contributed over €723 million to the region’s GDP. Furthermore, in 2022 alone, these projects created more than 3,900 full-time equivalent jobs.

Amazon’s commitment to renewable energy aligns with its goal to power its operations, including Amazon Web Services data centers, fulfillment centers, and physical stores, with 100% renewable energy by 2025, five years ahead of the original 2030 target. In 2022, 90% of Amazon’s global electricity consumption came from renewable energy sources.
