Der Leyen visits EU-funded energy project in Podgorica

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen visited a power substation in Podgorica, Montenegro, which is one of 15 electrical transmission facilities that have been upgraded with EU funding. This project is part of the Trans-Balkan Electricity Corridor, a flagship initiative in the Economic and Investment Plan for the Western Balkans.

The European Union provided €25 million in non-repayable grants to improve Montenegro’s domestic transmission network, reduce losses, outages, and lower electricity prices. The total investment in upgrading Montenegro’s electric transmission grid exceeds €144 million, with funding from Montenegro’s resources, EU grants, and investments from Italy, Germany, and the EBRD.

This project enhances Montenegro’s potential to become a significant energy provider in the region and strengthens regional connectivity with the electricity transmission systems of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia, further integrating the region into the broader European energy market.
